Review: Why were We Allowed to Watch Robin Hood: Men in Tights as Kids? (Spoilers)

When I was a wee lass, one of my brother and I’s favorite movies was Robin Hood: Men in Tights, directed by Mel Brooks and staring Cary Elwes and when I say that it was one of our favorites, I mean it. We would watch it constantly. It was pretty much a morning ritual for us to turn on Hulu, find Men in Tights, and watch it for a half hour or so while we made and ate breakfast because it was one of the only things we could agree on watching. This lasted for a few months until my brother got tired of it and had to find something else to watch.

From there, a couple of years passed and Robin Hood: Men in Tights slipped to the back of my mind where I partially forgot about it, until last year when I saw it on Hulu while looking for something to watch while making dinner. I turned it on and within a few minutes, was grateful my brother was outside helping my parents paint the house because I realized something I hadn’t before. This movie somehow got less appropriate as I got older. Things that had completely gone over my head as a child all of a sudden made sense…way too much sense. Too much sense to the point where I was wondering why I had ever been allowed to watch it as a kid when some of the jokes were incredibly blatant sexual innuendoes.

That’s not to say the entire movie is awful though. If you’re looking for something to turn on as background noise or just can’t find a movie to watch, it’s good enough. It’s campy and fun, not all of the jokes are incredibly inappropriate, and some still stick. However, if you’re going to watch it around kids…I would exercise some caution. Like I said, with the number of innuendoes in it, it gets less appropriate as time goes on. If you think your kids won’t understand it, okay, but if you don’t want them exposed to it, then don’t turn it on.

Until next time,

M.J.

    1. Ehh…they both have some jokes that aren’t great but Monty Python didn’t have it constantly. But then again there was that one scene with the nuns….

      1. I was watching that scene while two of my cousins (11 and 12) were in the room with me. They both were just looking up on the TV in a mix of horror, disgust, and confusion. Then we watched Napoleon Dynamite and that made them cringe the memory from their skulls
