Apologetics: Debunking Deconstruction – Is God Racist?

This is a yet another question that has led quite a few people to deconstruct from Christianity and like most other things that lead to deconstruction, this is based off of the actions of man, not God. I’m pretty sure that most of the reasons why people think God is racist is because they read about how slave owners in the South would use the Bible to try to keep their slaves from leaving or because they’re told that all Christians are white supremacist Trump supporters. Or maybe they were in a church or Christian cult (such as Mormonism) that is actually racist (Mormons announced in 1978 that black people could be part of the priesthood, which meant that they could get into heaven after over a century of saying they couldn’t and only recently in 2013 said that having black skin is no longer a sign of a curse). But what does God think about this? Is God Himself racist?

Just like with the other allegations against God, the answer to this question is “No.”

In Genesis, we’re told that God created all men in His image. He didn’t create them specifically as one race or the other. Those changes in skin tone came about because of genetic mutations that occurred in the human race later down the line. It doesn’t matter what your race is. If you have faith in Christ, you’re welcomed into heaven.

“But what about the distinction between the Jews and the Gentiles in the Old Testament?” you might be asking. “Doesn’t that contradict what you just said?”

The answer to that question is once again “No”.

In the Old Testament, the Jews were God’s chosen group to be the priests that would minister to the Gentiles. Unfortunately, the Jews became too prideful because of their status and became hateful towards the Gentiles (which was not God’s fault; that was the fault of prideful mankind). When Jesus died on the cross, he died for Jew and Gentile alike, breaking that barrier as everyone could come to Him for salvation. God is impartial and loves us no matter our skin tone so no, He is not racist.

  1. I’m about to make a post on an Influencer who recently left the faith. It’s interesting to see the reasons why people denounce their faith to “deconstruct” Christianity. I strongly believe that those individuals had the wrong perspective or bad expectation of God when they initially came into the faith. Frank Turek puts it beautifully, “They are talked out of it because they were never talked into it.” Unfortunately, we have so many people who portray the Scriptures in the wrong light by creating their own doctrines and understandings. As you know, sadly, this is one of many false understandings of the Scriptures.

Other than the Gospels directly telling us that Jesus was crucified, there are non-Christian sources that mentioned it, the most notable of which (in my opinion) was Tacitus who mentioned Jesus’ execution under Pontius Pilate during the reign of Tiberius in his book Annals, which lines up with what we get in the Bible. We also have Josephus mentioning Christ’s crucifixion in Antiquities of the Jews, which, despite the accusations that later Christian scribes may have altered the text, scholars still agree that he did mention Jesus, even if the text was later embellished. I’ll be covering this question and some others related to the crucifixion (and maybe the Exodus, though I’m not sure if I’ll have time to cover that one) in April.

      1. The 2nd century passage in Tacitus’ Annals is regarded as hearsay, as I am sure you know, and the Josephus passage is a forgery.
        Odd there is a surely nothing contemporary/1st century, don’t you think?
