Happy Inauguration Day! After a long wait, January 20th is finally here, which means America can start making its comeback after four years of Biden falling asleep, losing his train of thought, and letting America go to hell. However, for Christians concerned about the massive wave of deconstruction that’s hit the church, today also marks the 8th anniversary of a very important date in deconstruction history: Inauguration Day 2016.
Now, why would that day be important to the deconstruction movement? What did Trump becoming the 45th president have to do with people leaving Christianity? Was the dastardly President Sweet Potato really that evil?
To understand why this was, we need to understand the state of the church in and the state of politics in 2016. The church at this point had already been in a state of decline ever since 2007 when the smart phone came out and more serious church scandals were coming to light. Millennials were the generation that were the new adults while Gen Zers were the ones in Sunday School or just graduating. This is important to note because according to Pew Research Center, 55% of Millennials identified as Democrats and 33% identified as Republicans. Most Millennials on both sides also took more liberal stances on things like marijuana legalization, abortion, same-sex marriage, etc. than older generations, which meant that churches were now split between appealing to the more conservative, older generations or the more liberal Millennials. And that’s not even mentioning the fact that a year later in 2017, a study by Barna uncovered that only 17% of Christians held a biblical world view, a number that’s been steadily dropping (You can read the rest of this article here. It’s depressing.)
This would’ve been bad enough, but it got worse with the terrible media coverage that Trump was receiving. Media outlets such as CNN, The Washington Post, New York Times, MSNBC, etc. were intent to smear Trump as much as possible, and since they were still seen as legitimate source of news back then, many people believed them when they said that Trump wanted to do things like take away your “right” to an abortion (which he never did – he handed the ability to ban or legalize abortion back to the states), was working with Russia (which also wasn’t true), was racist and homophobic (even though he did nothing to harm or disparage either group), etc. Even though none of these claims were true, it worked to whip Democrat Millennials and Gen Zers into a frenzy with them automatically hating anything that they deemed MAGA (which just meant anything to the right of Hillary Clinton).
Unfortunately, Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) was something that had infected both sides. While one side hated Tump, the other had many people who had pretty much accepted him a the second coming of Christ. This sadly painted all Republicans/conservatives as rabid Trump supporters, even though there were a lot of conservatives that were not fans of Trump. And a lot of these people were in the church.
This combination of factors from hell led not only to deep political division in general but also led to deep division within the church. Because of how many Trump supporters (or perceived Trump supporters) were in the church and the fact that Trump was being supported by many so-called Evangelical Christians (a term that should either be given a new, concrete definition or wiped from our memory completely since it no longer means anything), many Millennials who had bought into the Leftist version of TDS seemed to see the those people as representative of the church. Furthermore, because of how some of these Trump supporters seemed to worship Trump, these new deconstructors saw the words “God” and “church” as the same as “MAGA” and “Right-wing extremist”, even though those are completely different things. So, to support the current thing and fight back against the person that the media had basically painted as evil incarnate, they left the church and whatever faith they claimed to have for the cult of Leftism and began posting about it everywhere. If you didn’t want to be associated with MAGA, it became popular to leave Christianity and choose a new religion.
Now, can you see the problem with this? It’s pretty obvious.
The problem with this is that Trump is a man, not God. If Trump was God, I’m pretty sure the world would be shaped like a massive, golden T, we would all have orange skin, and I would have walked off the side of the world by now. Thankfully, however, that is not the case. Instead, the God that Christians worship (or should be worshipping) is the God of the Bible, who is perfect, merciful, all-knowing, all-powerful, loving and kind who came to save us from the price of our sins (God’s wrath) if we repent and follow Him. That’s more than Trump can or ever could do.
And to close this post, another Trump presidency is not going to be that bad. If you’re still terrified, why don’t you make a list of everything you think he’ll do (if you’re feeling really gutsy, put it in the comments) and look at it at the end of the year and every year following to see if any of your predictions came true. And if you still don’t like it, you can leave. No one is stopping you. If you’re scared that Trump is going to take away your ability to kill your baby (sorry, “rights as a woman”), I’ve heard that Britain is a great place to be this time of year, what with its Leftist government and very nice illegal immigrants from places like Syria and Pakistan that would never do nothing wrong and will totally respect your bodily autonomy.
Oh wait….
Until next time,
M.J.
Happy inauguration!
