The holidays are upon us with Thanksgiving being tomorrow, which means that we’ll be hanging out with our families, stuffing ourselves with turkey, mashed potatoes, and whatever else is on the table. So here are some of the people that I think everyone has interacted with during the holidays.
#1: Immediate Family
These are the obvious ones such as your parents, in-laws, siblings, and whichever set of grandparents you prefer. Depending on your relationship with them, they can either make or break holiday visits.
#2: Cousins
The cousins are usually fine. If they’re around the same age as you, at least you have someone to try to hang out with who isn’t an adult.
#3: Random Uncle
This is that one uncle that you only ever see at this time of year and forget exists for the rest of the year. Just smile and wave, boys. Smile and wave.
#4: Creepy Uncle
Not everyone has this dude in the family, but for the ones that do, this is the guy that is the reason why you carry pepper spray, and he immediately makes you want to put 9-1-1 and your lawyer on speed dial just in case.
#5: Crazy Cat Lady Aunt
I have talked to several people, and every person I’ve talked to has this type of aunt, myself included. This is the stereotypical aunt who never got married (or, if she did, is divorced now), drinks copious amounts of wine, leans at varying degrees to the Left, and is almost always covered in cat fur.
#6: Semi-Passive Aggressive Aunt
These are most of my aunts and this group can also encompass the crazy cat ladies. They’re the ones who will be civil while you’re there and you can tolerate them, but the rest of the time are manipulative or openly dislike you, either saying it your face or gossiping behind your back. There’s a reason why you only see them once or twice a year.
#7: Nice Aunt
This is the one who is just a joy to be around and is pretty down to earth. 10/10. These ladies are awesome.
#8: Random “Aunt”
This is that one person who is close friends with one of your uncles, but they aren’t dating or maybe they did at one point or something, but she isn’t your aunt though she’s been in the family long enough where everyone knows her and she could maybe have honorary aunt status.
#9: Great-Grandparents
It’s rare that anyone knows their great-grandparents, but for those of us who do, it can be very interesting learning about what life was like even before your grandparents were around.
#10: Random dude
This is not the same as the random uncle. This is just the person that got invited who you’ve never seen in your life.
Until next time,
M.J.
Happy Thanksgiving!
