Art Gallery: Party Lights

This painting was inspired by the YouTuber Ahmad Art. I think I did this one around the end of 9th grade, which makes it one of my later paintings. However, it isn’t my favorite painting for three reasons.

The first reason is the lights. For a first attempt, they look fine, though I could’ve done a better job of making them lighter and more glowy. As it is, they look very opaque and not very bright.

The second thing I would change is the string the lights are on. It varies from being pretty thick to becoming much thinner and unlike the lights, it’s somewhat translucent in parts. If I could redo this painting, I would’ve drawn the string in pencil and traced over it in black marker to make it more opaque and consistent.

Lastly, the moon is barely there even though I used white gouache. What you can see of it looks blobby and just doesn’t look good. I think should’ve used white, watered-down acrylic for it instead of white gouache since, like watercolor, the more water you add to gouache, the less opaque it is and when it’s dry, you will definitely need more water to activate it.

All in all, I would rate this painting a 5/10. It’s okay, but needs improvement.

Until next time,

M.J.
